Explaining our Ballot Initiative
This measure will ensure our right to propose and vote on laws that put hardworking families first and ensure that when Nebraskans make a decision at the ballot box, politicians respect it.
Our constitutional amendment will change the number of state lawmakers required to undo or change laws voters have passed from two-thirds of the state legislature to a four-fifths supermajority. It also protects our freedom to vote on important issues facing our communities by strengthening protections for the ballot initiative process itself, preventing politicians from passing laws that restrict the people’s ability to bring initiatives.

About Respect Nebraska Voters
Respect Nebraska Voters is a Nebraska-based and Nebraska-led coalition. Organizations from across the state have endorsed our effort, including the Nebraska State AFL-CIO, Heartland Workers Center, Voices for Children in Nebraska and Nebraska Appleseed’s Action Fund, among others. Our coalition includes everyday Nebraskans living in every part of our state, many of whom have been involved in recent ballot efforts to guarantee earned paid sick leave, raise the minimum wage, legalize medical cannabis and end predatory payday lending.
Our Leadership
Every initiative has ballot sponsors, a formal role required to launch a ballot measure. Our sponsors have a firsthand understanding of what is at stake.
Al Davis is a former state senator and Sandhills rancher who served as one of the sponsors on the 2020 campaign to end predatory payday lending.
Dawn Essink is a former volunteer with the minimum wage and paid sick leave campaigns. She is an active volunteer with the interfaith group, Omaha Together One Community, and other metro-area organizations.
Jo Giles was a sponsor of the 2024 paid sick leave initiative. She is executive director of the Women’s Fund of Omaha and its affiliated 501(c)(4) Lead the Change Fund.
