After Nebraska lawmakers repeatedly sought to narrow laws enacted by voters this year, advocates who worked to get those laws on the ballot in 2024 are seeking to make it harder for the Legislature to rewrite them.
A coalition dubbed “Respect Nebraska Voters” launched a campaign Thursday to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot that, if approved, would increase the number of state lawmakers required to overturn or alter laws approved by voters.
Under the proposal, 40 of Nebraska’s 49 lawmakers would have to vote in lockstep to alter a law enacted by votes — seven more than the 33 required now.
