A coalition of labor, civic and advocacy groups launched a statewide signature-gathering campaign Monday to constitutionally shield voter-led initiatives from legislative interference.
The group, Respect Nebraska Voters, is seeking a constitutional amendment for the November 2026 ballot. If passed, the measure would require a four-fifths legislative supermajority to overturn or amend laws approved by voters. Currently, a two-thirds majority can overrule such initiatives. It also would apply that same four-fifths threshold to any future laws that attempt to restrict the initiative process itself.
